Yes, you read that title right. Not TED Talk, but FED Talk. “FED Talks are like Jewish TED Talks, and since they’re Jewish, there is of course food! As they state on their website, FED: Like TED, but you get fed.”
When I heard about this NYC-based program, I thought, “That’s right up my alley.” So I spoke with Deborah Fishman Shelby, who started FED in her home and who prepares the food for each event. We discussed, and decided that I would present a talk while I was on my most recent lecture tour in the US. (By the way, I’m currently planning my next two tours for the first half of 2024 — Feb/Mar and May/Jun. So if you want me to come speak to your community, please get in touch ASAP.)
The topic I chose was, appropriately, about food. I call it, “What Makes a Food Jewish?”
I hope to write more on this subject in the future, and a number of the ideas I discussed have been percolating in my head for some time now. But I organized them into this 18-minute talk, and I think it effectively clarifies and crystallizes my thoughts.
Since it is fairly short, I uploaded the whole thing to YouTube, and am sharing it here for you all to watch. The sound quality is not perfect (though pretty good, I’d say). So if you’re having trouble hearing every word, check out the subtitles, which are accurate.
Let me know your thoughts! I’d love to start a broader conversation about this.
